Monitoring visits for phonics screening check

Arrangements for the monitoring of the phonics screening check.

Local Authorities have a statutory responsibility to monitor the administration of the KS1 phonics screening check.

10% of schools will receive an unannounced monitoring visit.  These visits will be carried out by Susan Poole, Lynn Bruce, Mary Hirst and Jennie Bainbridge.  Monitoring visitors will carry a signed letter of authority as well as their own photo identification in the form of a passport, driving licence or official work pass.

Of the visits, 10% will be carried out prior to the phonics screening check window; 80% will be carried out during the window; and 10% will take place immediately after the window.

Having an unexpected visitor in school can be unsettling for pupils.  In order to minimise disruption to pupils sitting the tests, please discuss this and make pupils aware that visitors may arrive unannounced.

Further information around the monitoring visits is available at  https://www.gov.uk/guidance/key-stage-2-tests-and-phonics-screening-check-monitoring-visits  under the heading monitoring visits.

Please ensure you are familiar with the STA guidance around the administration of the phonics screening checks.
